Vavamuffin was founded in February 2003 in Warsaw, or in the city’s Siekierki district to be precise, blending the green areas surrounding the nearby Czerniakowskie Lake with the smoke from the Siekierki Heat and Power Station.
The group’s name - Vavamuffin – is a combination of two words: ‘raggamuffin’ which stands for a Jamaican style of singing and ‘Vava’ which means simply Warszawa (Warsaw). The group brings together both debut musicians and household names of the Polish reggae scene.
Vavamuffin has given several hundred gigs, from small club venues to Przystanek Woodstock with an audience of several hundred thousand. In addition to Poland it has performed in the United States, Ethiopia, Italy, Germany, Finland, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ireland and Great Britain. It is in public gigs that the Vavamuffin is in its element. If you go to one, you will want more, and more, and more...
Since 2004 the ensemble has worked closely with the Karrot Kommando label and concert agency, the most thriving independent producer in reggae and its environs. It is under its wings that Vavamuffin has released its CDs.
In a word: Vavamuffin is a tram linking Warsaw’s districts of Grochów and Saska Kępa with Montego Bay and Kingston. The tickets are punched by the bass and the journey always coincides with a state holiday. He who does not get on the tram sports a moustache.
