The music of Gadająca Tykwa (‘The Nattering Gourd’) can be described as ethnic or world music. Its specific character is derived from a blend of traditional folk instruments with those used in classical and pop music. The group’s array of instruments includes balaphones, ngoni, djembe and gita from West Africa, the Cuban conga, traditional ‘ney’ Turkish flutes, the Bulgarian ‘kawal’, hurdy-gurdy, Jew’s harp, didjeridoo, double-bass, French horn and acoustic guitar.
The group looks for inspiration in the pulsating rhythms of West Africa, as well as in blues and country music. It also incorporates elements of improvisation on well-known jazz themes and reggae tunes. What Gadająca Tykwa offers is music of wide ranging emotions, soft and peaceful as well as dynamic and full of trance and pulse. Caribbean melodies are blended in an extraordinary way with Warsaw street folklore.
The music of Gadająca Tykwa is close to traditional folk music in one more aspect – it is ludic in character, that is playful, serving the spirit of festival, joy and entertainment.
